On November 11, 2022, ILEA Bangkok and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) held the Bias-Motivated Hate Crimes Course: Session 1 training. The course included a comprehensive overview of bias-motivated hate crimes. Additionally, it explored how bias-motivated violence could serve as a trigger for or a component of mass violence. The instructors addressed why it’s important to recognize bias-motivated hate crimes from a law enforcement standpoint and outlined specific examples of various types of hate crimes. There were 29 participants from six subscribing countries that learned about investigating bias-motivated hate crimes. Also, instruction was giving on how police departments could setup a liaison office, promote greater information-sharing to help solve current hate crimes and steps to prevent future hate crimes from occurring.
