Investigating Criminal Use of Cryptocurrencies Session 5: (June 3-7, 2024)

On June 7, 2024, ILEA Bangkok, in collaboration with the United States Secret Service (USSS), concluded a one-week course on Investigating the Criminal Use of Cryptocurrencies: Session 5, in Bangkok, Thailand. The course was designed to provide a foundational understanding of the technology, software, and procedures involved in investigating the criminal use of cryptocurrencies. It offered in-depth technical instruction on tracing techniques and investigative tools used to identify cryptocurrencies, addresses, and wallets, and demonstrated how to attribute these addresses and wallets to suspects using open-source tools, software, and technology. Additionally, it focused on current and emerging cryptocurrencies and the techniques utilized by criminal actors to evade detection by law enforcement.

The course featured 41 participants from 11 subscribing countries, who learned the mechanics and operational elements of various cryptocurrencies. Participants also learned how to identify the presence of cryptocurrencies in their investigations and gained an understanding of the operating procedures of cryptocurrency wallet transfers, including inventory methods and how seizures can be used during investigations.
